HISTORY

Wine Making in Britain

The Romans introduced vine growing to Britain and in the Middle Ages wine making flourished in England, particularly in the monasteries. However, after their dissolution by Henry VIII virtually no English wine was produced commercially. Wine had to be imported from Europe and more recently, the New World.

After the Second World War, interest in viticulture revived in Britain. Varieties that are grown are predominantly German and French hybrid varieties such as: Mueller Thurgau, Reichensteiner, Huxelrebe, Madeline Angevine, Pheonix, Seyval Blanc, Kerner, and Bacchus.

Grape Growing at Penarth

We grow quite a few different varieties of grapes at Penarth Vineyard. The varieties include: Pinot Noir, Pinot Meunier, Chardonnay, some of the hybrid varieties mentioned above and a small section devoted to experimental varieties.

The first vineyard planted at Penarth Vineyard was in February 1999 and the second, a year later in 2000. In total we have about 10 acres planted to vines.

At present our wine is made for us by Three Choirs. It is sold in restaurants in London, Carno and Montgomery. We may also be found in Delicatessens and Farm shops in Aberaeron, Machynlleth, Caersws, Montgomery, Welshpool and from a small shop at the entrance to the vineyard.
